about

Available again in a very different version after being available originally on Hallo Excentrico!, Black is Part 1 of the second album by Distance.

After the bass and keyboards jamming against the rain with the first recordings, Black was released as the first part of a homage to Sanjay Leela Bhanasali’s film Black (White was the second) who Andy picked up the soundtrack in his local library and was spellbound by the textures in the music, resulting in him creating his own homage (with Tony departing the project halfway to live in Cambridge) with stuttering building locks of vocals and noise to build up a tapesdy that was completely different to everything to work they had done in Distance.

Black, the first part of the two part set was a wild affair just before Tony left the project with the pair of them building up a collage of noise and sound stripping down Tony’s bass so it becomes a gentle hush, almost unrecognisable against the crushing distorted noise to create a literal black ambient wall of noise.

For its 2021 re-release, Andy N has revisited the original recordings (which can be downloaded from www.archive.org/details/hemp034 if you wish direct for free) and as well as re-mastering them in his studio has re-edited the tracks to take them in some cases to take them in a very different way to provide the audience with a much more balanced recording than what was available to both him and Tony in 2007.

This album is dedicated to Tony and rainy days on Ashton Road in Oldham and microphones hanging out of windows trying to caught some kind of feeling over 2005 to 2007.
